Where the Forest Meets the Mountain (Llyn Crafnant)
Where the Forest Meets the Mountain (Llyn Crafnant)
Leaving the Conwy Valley and climbing up through the steep, winding lanes of Trefriw, the road eventually opens into a breathtakingly secluded valley. At its heart lies Llyn Crafnant, a spectacularly serene lake nestled exactly where the dense pine woodlands of the Gwydir Forest meet the craggy, heather-clad lower slopes of the Carneddau mountain range.
Spanning almost a mile in length, the lake’s dark, mirror-like waters perfectly reflect the towering peaks that box in the head of the valley. Unlike some of the busier, more famous lakes in Eryri (Snowdonia), Llyn Crafnant retains an atmosphere of untouched isolation. The air here is often perfectly still, with the profound quiet broken only by the sound of tumbling mountain streams, the call of buzzards circling high above, and the wind sighing through the ancient evergreens.
